Andrew Roberts: Protean Haunted Matter
9.05.2025–17.05.2025
Presented as a collaboration between Pequod Co. (Mexico City), and Sperling (Munich).
Pequod Co. is proud to present Andrew Roberts’ work for the first time in Germany. As part of the gallery’s collaboration with Sperling for Various Others, the presentation consists of a three channel video titled Protean Haunted Matter. The work is part of a larger series in which Roberts conceives silicone as an entity that suddenly becomes self aware. Its consciousness is born in the form of a poetic monologue that raises questions about its own existence and the substantial role it has been given.
The artist’s interest in the current state of civilization mediated by technology, materializes in reflections on the role that the film and video game industries have in generating narratives that support the agendas of dominant powers. At the same time, he emphasizes on the way the tools and mechanisms behind entertainment merge with warfare infrastructure, and the way that contemporary culture and virtuality have blurred the thin line that divides them.
Andrew Roberts (1995) was born in Tijuana, México – known for being the most transited political border in the world. Tijuana serves often as a symbolical scenery in his work, as it illustrates the social, political and economical tensions between Mexico and the United States, with all the complexities that derive from them. His work was part of the Whitney Biennial in 2022, and he is currently showing at the University Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City. Andrew will have a solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia in 2025.
