In the autumn of 2023, Andrew Gilbert traveled to Hangzhou, China, as representative of Leek Phone™ to explore potential business deals, establish new trade routes, seek territory for founding Emperor Andrew Instant Coffee plantations, and participate in the BY ART MATTERS artist residency program.

Anna McCarthy: ADVENTURE ROOM

There it is the train. It stands there. Ten more minutes, then five. With a heartfelt promise that 170 people and their equipment can stand amongst their own colourful, lightly flammable, materials. And, by the way, do you know how somebody can be so stupid as to put their anorak on the heater? A wood-panelled room, oh no, or even a larch casket installed above the heating as insulation to prevent draughts? This is bound to bring us to fame someday. - In the Alps, Elfriede Jelinek

Ice, Anarchy & The Pursuit of Madness. (1) An indication of addiction increase. Pupils dilate. McCarthy has spent the last years analysing, collecting, storing and preserving objects left behind by the living or dead in land-, and mainly, mountainscapes. Her collection includes remnants from Montserrat, Ranthambore, Cerro Provincia, Arco, Chamonix, Uriellu, Chiavenna and from the Laguna Capri, amongst others. The accompanying visual and acoustic logbook consisting of text, drawings, films, music and field recordings surrounding the topic of experiencing nature lay the foundation for ADVENTURE ROOM. McCarthy's own impressions mix with eclectic references to Petrarca, Aleister Crowley's murderous expeditions, Ecstatic Confessions, health and self-optimization bibles, the phenomenon of the "Third Man" hallucinations to the legend of the summit-cross sawyer. For ADVENTURE ROOM the artist builds modern reverent memorials within an almost orchestrated playground of coincidence and accident. The levels of intoxication are heightening. Loss of control is nigh. A game of power, people and the forces of nature. Exaltation, veneration, illusion and delusion. The new revolution occurs in nature. The landscape is political territory. Everyone wants to survive. Anarchists as well as right wing nationalists. Escapism entices. Make a fire, tie knots, plant vegetables, spin gravel, ration, consume. Scarpa, Scarpa, La Sportiva.

Da steht sie in der Talstation, die Bahn, noch zehn Sekunden, noch fünf, und hält die Hand aufs Herz, daß 170 Personen in ihr aufrecht mitsamt ihren Geräten, inmitten des bunten, leicht entflammbaren Materials, das sie selber sind, stehen können. Kannst du mir übrigens sagen, wie einer so blöd sein und seinen Anorak auf den Heizstrahler legen kann? Eine Zirbenstube, ach nein, ein Lärchenkästchen als Dämmung gegen Zugluft über die Heizung bauen? Dadurch werden wir noch alle berühmt werden.

Ice, Anarchy & The Pursuit of Madness. (1) Anzeichen für
eine zunehmende Abhängigkeit. Die Pupillen weiten sich. McCarthy hat die letzten Jahre damit verbracht zu analysieren, sammeln, horten und schützen von hinterlassenen Gegenständen und Überresten die sie beim Bergsteigen von Lebendigen sowie Toten gefunden hat. Ihre Sammlung umfasst Funde u.a. aus Montserrat, Ranthambore, vom Cerro Provincia, Arco, Chamonix, vom Uriellu, Chiavenna und aus der Laguna Capri. Das dazugehörige visuelle und akustische Logbuch aus Texten, Zeichnungen, Filmen, Musik und Field Recordings,
welches sich mit Naturerleben auseinandersetzt, liefert das Material für ADVENTURE ROOM. McCarthy’s eigene Eindrücke vermischen sich mit Referenzen zu Petrarca, Aleister Crowleys mörderischen Expeditionen, Ekstatische Konfessionen, Gesundheits- und Selbstoptimierungsbibeln, das Phänomen der "Dritten Mann” Erscheinungen, bis zur Legende des Gipfelkreuzsägers. Für ADVENTURE ROOM errichtet die Künstlerin eine moderne Gedenkstätte in einem instrumentierten Spielplatz des Zufalls und Unfalls. Die Stufen des Rausches werden visualisiert. Ständig droht der Kontrollverlust. Ein Spiel von Mächten, Menschen und Naturgewalten. Ekstase, Ehrfurcht, Illusion und Wahn. Die neue Revolution findet in der Natur statt. Die Landschaft ist politisches Terrain. Alle wollen überleben. Anarchisten sowie völkische Agitatoren. Der Eskapismus lockt. Klettern, rationieren, Feuer machen, konsumieren. Scarpa, Scarpa, La Sportiva.
