Mit einer Doppelpräsentation von Ana Navas und Anousha Payne kehren wir dieses Jahr zur 11. Ausgabe der Paris Internationale zurück. Beide Künstlerinnen blicken auf ein bemerkenswertes Jahr zurück, das von bedeutenden Ausstellungen geprägt war, die ihre Praxis in verschiedenen Kontexten erweitert haben. Ana Navas nahm an der von Marie-Anne McQuay kuratierten Liverpool Biennale 

, kuratiert von Anlam de Coster, eine beeindruckende Ausstellung im historischen Zeyrek Çinili Hamam in Istanbul präsentierte.

Eine zentrale Frage in Ana Navas' Praxis ist die nach dem Einfluss, der eher durch Zufall als durch direkte Kausalität geprägt ist und in beide Richtungen wirkt. Wo finden Künstler ihre Inspiration? Sind alle Schöpfungen von Natur aus Zusammensetzungen der Vergangenheit, oder ist es der Akt der Rezeption und Neuinterpretation, der die Vergangenheit letztendlich zum Leben erweckt?

Anousha Paynes Werk bewegt sich an der Grenze zwischen persönlicher Erfahrung, Fiktion und Mythos und untersucht, wie Bedeutung durch Veränderungen in Zeit, Kultur und Medien verloren geht und gewonnen wird. Ihre Gemälde und Keramiken sind hybride Objekte, die die fließenden Verbindungen zwischen Menschen, Tieren, der natürlichen Welt und unbelebten Formen betonen.

Wie in früheren Serien verbinden auch Ana Navas’ neueste Werke aus geschmolzenem Glas historische und fiktionale Elemente, um die Hierarchie zwischen „Original“ und „Kopie“ zu hinterfragen. Ausgehend von Darstellungen von Frauen in modernistischen Gemälden von Künstlern wie Gauguin, Matisse und Macke isoliert Navas bestimmte Aspekte ihrer Persönlichkeit und befreit sie von stereotypen Darstellungen. Dabei werden Spuren direkter Bezüge letztlich ausgelöscht, und die Titel ihrer Werke entstehen oft aus spontanen Bemerkungen von Freunden und Kollegen, die sie wie Rorschach-Karten interpretieren.

Sperling is delighted to return to Paris Internationale with a duo presentation by Ana Navas and Anousha Payne. Both artists have had remarkable years, marked by significant exhibitions that expanded their practices across diverse contexts. Ana Navas participated in 

, the 2025 Liverpool Biennial curated by Marie-Anne McQuay, while Anousha Payne unveiled her solo exhibition 

 at the historic Zeyrek Çinili Hamam in Istanbul, curated by Anlam de Coster.

A central question in Ana Navas’s practice is that of influence, which is shaped more by chance than by direct causation and operates in both directions. Where do artists find their inspiration? Are all creations inherently composites of the past or is it the act of reception and reinterpretation that ultimately brings the past to life?

Anousha Payne’s work navigates the boundaries between personal experience, fiction, and myth, investigating how meaning is lost and gained through shifts in time, culture, and media. Her paintings and ceramics exist as hybrid objects, emphasizing the fluid connections between humans, animals, the natural world, and inanimate forms.

As in previous series, Ana Navas’s latest melted-glass works blend historical and fictional elements to question the hierarchy between “original” and “copy”. Drawing from depictions of women in modernist paintings by artists like Gauguin, Matisse, and Macke, Navas isolates and liberates certain aspects of their personalities from stereotypical portrayals. In the process, traces of direct reference are ultimately erased, and her works’ titles often arise from spontaneous remarks by friends and colleagues, who interpret them like Rorschach cards.
