For the first time, Sperling takes part at miart, Milan, with a solo presentation by Andrew Gilbert.
Sperling’s booth at miart 2022 is covered in pastel beige wallpaper to create a playful and cozy atmosphere yet like with all of Andrew Gilbert’s work the first sight is deceptive. Historical as well as current figures and events can come together in his unique artistic universe as he depicts the repetition of history and the impact of 19th century imperialism on today.
In his works on paper and large-scale installations, the Scottish artist Andrew Gilbert (*1980) combines historical facts with fictional situations as well as the visionary with the absurd. The impulse is provided mostly by incidents connected to colonialism, especially that of the British Empire.
