Sperling is pleased collaborate with JO VAN DE LOO, both galleries based in Munich, at Art Düsseldorf 2023.
The presentation encompasses four artistic positions in two pairings, each sharing one half of the booth: Andreas Chwatal (JO VAN DE LOO) with Andrew Gilbert (Sperling), and Monika Michalko (JO VAN DE LOO) with Malte Zenses (Sperling). The opposing positions are not juxtaposed in isolation but crosspollinate each other through free and novel constellations, presented this way for the first time. Formally, the pairs are united by their deep examination of one respective medium, drawing or painting.
The foundation of this concept, however, is above all the conceptual and thematic commonality among the paired artists.
In their drawings, Andreas Chwatal and Andrew Gilbert are united by personal, historical reflection, but above all by the resulting socio-political and cultural commentary on current global events. Both develop, drawing from history, their very own, often utopian pictorial worlds.
Monika Michalko and Malte Zenses both feed their paintings with personal experience and memories. From these they develop a visual language of recurring modules, so that the works can be read universally, detached from the individual perspective of the artists.
